The Israeli army officially announces the assassination of Hashem Safieddine who was supposed to be the successor of Nasrallah in a violent airstrike on the southern suburbs in Beirut on October 3rd
The Israeli army confirmed on Tuesday that the head of Hezbollah’s executive council, Hashem Safieddine, whose name had been floated to succeed Hassan Nasrallah as the party’s secretary-general, was “eliminated” three weeks ago in an air strike on Beirut’s southern suburbs.
“It can now be confirmed that the IDF eliminated Hashem Safieddine, head of Hezbollah’s executive council, three weeks ago,” according to Israeli army statement.
According to the Israeli army, Safieddine killed with more than 25 members of Hezbollah’s intelligence department inside the command headquarters.
Meanwhile, Hezbollah didn’t confirm the death of Safieddine, who had been out of contact since the Israeli strike on the night of October 4 on the southern suburbs of Beirut, according to sources in Hezbollah.
It’s worth noting that the Shura Council, of Hezbollah which its highest body, elects the secretary-general.
The council hasn’t announced a successor to Nasrallah in the past week.
Hezbollah’s deputy secretary-general, Naim Qassem, is expected to assume the role of secretary-general, an automatic move after the leadership vacancy following Nasrallah and Safieddine’s assassination.
