“The Island of the Dead” mass graves of Coronavirus victims in New York

In light of the large numbers of deaths from the emerging coronavirus in the United States, especially in New York, the epicenter of the epidemic in the country, photos taken by a drone documented burials in mass graves in the state.

In the pictures, a group of men in protective clothing appeared and piled coffins in a huge hole on New York’s Hart Island.

Since about 150 years, it is buried people who are not relatives, or those who are unable to afford burial expenses, in this cemetery, but as a result of an outbreak of Coronavirus in New York and the death of thousands of his day, the burial became collectively.

A spokesman for New York Governor Freddy Goldstein said: “For decade, Hart Island has been used to bury people who have died and none of their relatives has claimed their bodies.

We will continue to use the island in the same way during this crisis”.

He added: “It is likely that the people who die in Coronavirus and meet these specifications will be buried on the island in the coming days,” according to the New York Post newspaper.

Burials are usually done in the cemetery once a week, but due to current situation, they are up to 5 times a week.

Up to now, New York State has recorded 172,358 covid-19 infections, of whom 7,844 died.

These numbers are greater than those recorded in whole countries affected by the virus, such as Spain, which witnessed 153 thousand cases, and Italy, where 143 thousand people were infected, and China, in which 82 thousand people were infected with Coronavirus.
