The Independent: After Biden recognized the genocide of Armenians, it is time to talk about Native Americans as well
The Independent published an article by Angelina Newsom titled “Biden acknowledges genocide against Armenians.
Time to talk about Native Americans, too”.
The author begins her article by talking about what was sparked by the official recognition by US President Joe Biden of the genocide massacres that occurred against Armenians in 1915 from a discussion about the legality of the United States ’issuance of such statements about genocide around the world at a time when it has not yet seriously dealt with its history of genocide against the right of Native Americans.
Track demonstrating in front of the US Consulate in Istanbul to protest Biden’s confession of the Armenian genocide massacres.
The writer says that the discussion focused on two things that have spread in the media and on social media, which are an article published in The Independent in 2019 entitled: “Erdogan threatens to recognize the killings of Native Americans as genocide in response to the decision on the Armenian Genocide and a video clip by the former Republican senator CNN commentator Rick Santorum says: “We created a nation out of nothing”.
Twitter users demanded that Erdogan fulfill his threat.
The writer believes that the talk that the United States has already recognized the genocide that it committed against the Native Americans is not true.
The lessons that are given to schoolchildren on this matter are mitigating lessons about the occurrence of “displacement” of the indigenous population or their involvement in wars with white colonists in self-defense to justify the massacres of genocide that occurred on a large scale.
Too often, US policy is relieved of responsibility by blaming disease and other factors for the declining indigenous population.
“War, slavery and displacement have also contributed to the decline of the country’s indigenous population,” quotes Vincent Wood’s original article in The Independent, and says that there is another word to describe all of this and that is “genocide”.
Without recognition of this, she continues, the credibility of the US government in international politics will be subject to “what about” deception and the genocide of indigenous people against the United States will be exploited.
The author concludes her article by saying that it is good for the United States to officially recognize the genocide crimes against Armenians, as this shows that the government is able to develop on some issues.
But in order for America to maintain its credibility on human rights issues and past atrocities, it must also acknowledge and correct its history in this area.
