Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid called on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to follow the example of the head of military intelligence – Major General Aharon Haliva – saying that Netanyahu should resign over the failures surrounding the October 7 attack.

The Times of Israel quoted Lapid as praising Haliva for his “justified and respectable” decision to resign from his position once a replacement was appointed, and quoted him as saying in a post on X, “Prime Minister Netanyahu must do the same”.

The Israeli army said in a statement earlier, Monday, that the head of Israeli military intelligence – Major General Aharon Haliva – resigned and that he would leave the position as soon as a successor is appointed.

Haliva said last year that he bears responsibility for the intelligence failures that allowed the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7 to occur.

Haliva was one of a number of senior commanders who said they didn’t expect the attack and failed to prevent it.

“The intelligence division under my command didn’t live up to the mission assigned to us; The ghost of that black day has haunted me ever since,” he said in his resignation letter published by the Israeli army.
