The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, announced that the Union has decided to end the sanctions imposed on Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab and Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra.

This came during a press conference held by Kallas on Monday, following a meeting of EU foreign ministers in the Belgian capital, Brussels.

Kallas referred to the decision by EU foreign ministers to fully reactivate the EU-Syria cooperation agreement, considering this step an important indicator of the path to normalizing bilateral relations.

She added: “We also decided to end the sanctions imposed on the Syrian Ministers of Interior and Defense”.

Earlier on Monday, the EU-Syria Partnership Coordination Forum was held in Brussels, as part of a broader context of continued positive developments in relations between the two sides.

The past few days have witnessed high-level diplomatic activity, including visits by Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa to several European countries, and his participation in the informal meeting of the European Union and regional partners in Greek Cyprus last month.

The forum is also the result of a mutual path of openness, reinforced by previous visits by both the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, and the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to Damascus last January.
