The EU imposes new sanctions on Russia over disinformation and interference in elections!
The European Union has announced a new sanctions framework targeting individuals and entities linked to Russia for election interference, spreading fake news, and engaging in cyberwarfare.
The framework aims to punish those who undermine the values and security of the EU and its member states.
The new sanctions, approved by the European Council, target individuals and entities working in concert with Russia to spread disinformation, sabotage critical infrastructure or exploit migrants to destabilize the country.
The framework is based on a proposal from Josep Borrell, the EU’s foreign policy chief.
The European Council noted in a press release that these malicious activities are part of a coordinated campaign by Russia aimed at dividing European society, destabilizing the European Union, and weakening its support for Ukraine.
Targeted individuals and entities are subject to an asset freeze, EU citizens and companies are prohibited from making funds available to them, and a travel ban is imposed on the individuals concerned.
Fears of hybrid warfare that combines traditional and digital methods are growing, following a warning from Russian spymaster Michael Weiss.
Testifying before the US Helsinki Commission, Weiss said Russian agents remain active in Europe and are planning attacks on vital targets such as the Paris Olympics.
Weiss also said that the recent sabotage attacks in the Czech Republic and Bulgaria were carried out by the same Russian unit that carried out the attempted poisoning of Sergei and Yulia Skripal in England.
Since the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the EU has imposed sanctions on more than 1,000 people close to President Vladimir Putin, targeting strategic sectors such as gas and diamonds.
Brussels has recently developed tools to combat hybrid warfare, which poses a growing threat to European security.
