The details of the global technical failure
According to George Kurtz, chief executive of cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike, said Friday that the technical glitch that caused the disruption of many services around the world wasn’t a security incident or a cyberattack.
Kurtz wrote on X that the company is working with customers affected by the malfunction discovered in a single content update for Windows users, while Mac and Linux systems weren’t affected.
“This isn’t a security incident or a cyberattack… The problem has been identified,” he wrote.
CrowdStrike invited its customers to visit its website for the latest updates.
The source of the global technical glitch is related to the protection system provided by CrowdStrike, a cybersecurity technology company to governments, airports and large corporations.
According to data reported by DownDetector, which tracks reported internet outages by users, increased service outages were seen by Visa, Amazon, EDT Security, and airlines including American Airlines and Delta.
Microsoft 365 posted on X that the company is redirecting affected traffic to alternative systems to mitigate the impact in a more convenient way and that it’s observing a positive trend in service availability.
Meanwhile, major disruptions reported by airlines and airports grew.
In the United States, the Federal Aviation Administration said American United, Delta and Allegian had stopped operating.
Airlines and railways and television stations in United Kingdom were disrupted by computer problems, while low-cost carrier Ryanair reported the glitch.
“We’re currently seeing a network outage due to a global IT outage by a third party beyond our control… We advise all passengers to arrive at the airport at least three hours before the scheduled departure time”.
Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport said on its website that the disruption had had a significant impact on flights to and from the busy European hub.
In Germany, Berlin airport said that due to a technical failure, there will be delays in check-in for some flights.
At Rome’s Leonardo da Vinci Airport, some flights to the United States recorded delays, while others were not affected.
