German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius on Friday stressed the importance of investing in the navy because of the threat posed by Russia.

During a visit to the Eckernforde naval base in the northern Germany state of Schleswig-Holstein, Pistorius said he would now focus on how and at what speed Germany could order four necessary 212CD submarines.

Pistorius noted that the decision depended, among other things, on further budget negotiations.

The German Defense Minister’s comments came just days after Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s coalition government signed a 2025 budget deal that was hotly debated.

Germany has so far ordered two 212CD submarines and has the option to buy four to six more.

The order for four additional submarines could be worth up to 4 billion Euros ($4.3 billion).

The 212CD submarines are being built as part of a multibillion-Euro German-Norwegian project.

Work has already begun on the manufacture of the first four submarines for Norway at the Thyssen Corp Marine Systems shipyard in Kiel.
