Syrian Interior Minister: Russia is a superpower and negotiations over the two Russian bases are ongoing
Syrian Interior Minister Ali Kaddah stressed that the relationship between Syria and Russia is based on respect for Syrian sovereignty and territorial integrity, explaining that cooperation with Russia as a superpower aims to serve the interests of the Syrian people at the international level.
Speaking to Sputnik Radio, Kaddah said, “Dealing with Russia today is different from the previous period, as Syria has begun to deal with Russia as an independent sovereign state”.
He added that negotiations over the two Russian bases on the Syrian coast are still ongoing, and the results are expected to be announced soon.
Kaddah also pointed out that cooperation with Russia serves Syrian interests and is part of the government’s efforts to build strategic relations with other countries that contribute to supporting regional and international stability.
In a related context, Kaddah explained that Syria is currently experiencing a phase of comprehensive reconstruction of security institutions, which are based on efficiency and integrity, stressing that the Ministry of Interior plays a major role in this context through cooperation with the Ministry of Justice to protect the rights of the Syrian people.
He also spoke about the efforts made to build new security institutions that include training cadres in various fields such as immigration, passports, traffic and forensic medicine, noting that the ministry seeks to benefit from international experiences to develop these institutions and enhance cooperation with Arab and international countries.
Kaddah also stressed the importance of enhancing security cooperation with neighboring and Arab countries, explaining that the ministry is working to open channels of communication and exchange of security expertise to achieve internal and regional stability, in addition to cooperation in reconstruction and economic and social development.
He pointed out that cooperation with neighboring countries in the security field is a priority for the Syrian government, with the aim of enhancing national security and achieving sustainable development.
He also stressed that the delegations that visited Damascus stressed the need to lift the sanctions imposed on Syria, which negatively affect the Syrian people.
Regarding the Kurds, Kaddah explained that the Kurds are an essential part of the Syrian people, and that the negotiations with them were political, stressing the Syrian government’s keenness to cooperate with them to achieve security and stability, while preserving the unity of Syrian territory.
At the end of his speech, Kaddah stressed the importance of social justice and ensuring the rights of all components of Syrian society, explaining that the ministry of interior is working to reassure all sects, address concerns, and pursue violating parties to ensure the application of the law and justice.
