Ron DeSantis announced withdrawal from the presidential race and endorse Trump
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has withdrawn from the race to run for the US presidential elections from the Republican Party, announcing the suspension of his election campaign and his support for the candidacy of Donald Trump.
DeSantis announced his decision on Sunday evening, after he was Trump’s most prominent competitor for the Republican Party’s nomination ticket in the elections that the United States will witness in November 2024.
Republican politician DeSantis posted a video on his account on X, announcing the suspension of his campaign for the presidential elections.
He said that he wants to give former President Donald Trump another chance, considering that the latter is superior to current President Joe Biden.
He added, “It’s clear that the majority of Republican votes want to give Trump another chance… I signed a pledge to support the Republican candidate, and I will honor this pledge”.
DeSantis ruled out the possibility of winning the elections, noting that “therefore he cannot ask his supporters for more time and resources”.
In several opinion polls in early 2023, DeSantis showed an advantage over Trump, but his popularity has been declining for several months due to his campaign’s flawed strategy and his apparent lack of flexibility in his dealings with voters regarding campaign matters, in addition to Trump’s strong control so far over a large portion of the party’s electoral base.
The withdrawal of the Republican politician means that the country’s former ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, is now the last competitor capable of denying Trump a victory in the presidential nomination race.
The decision came two days before the next scheduled primary election in New Hampshire.
The primary elections will continue until June 8, 2024.
In July and August, the Democratic and Republican parties announce their official candidates for the presidential elections that will be held on November 5.
