Former US ambassador to Damascus, Robert Ford, said that the White House will witness a debate about the fate of US forces in Syria if Donald Trump returns to the presidency by winning the next presidential election in November.

According to Ford, if Trump wins, there will be questions about whether US troops will remain in Syria or not.

Ford ruled out Washington normalizing its relations with Damascus unless political negotiations succeed in forming a new transitional government that enjoys broad support from various Syrian components.

Ford added that there is a possibility of an internal debate in the White House between two groups: one that wants to withdraw troops because they do not want to spend US resources in Syria, and another that strongly opposes Iran and seeks to resist it by all possible means.

Ford pointed out that sanctions on Damascus will continue in the absence of a comprehensive political solution to the Syrian crisis, stressing that there is strong support for these sanctions in Congress regardless of the identity of the next president.
