Reports: Fatal mistake by a Russian general may be one of the main reasons for the Kursk incursion

Amid threats from the Russian Security Council to defeat Ukraine, Russian authorities announced on Wednesday that Moscow had been subjected to the largest Ukrainian drone attack since the war began in 2022.

This attack comes as part of the expanded ground incursion that Ukraine began more than two weeks ago.

However, this surprise attack inside Russian territory has dramatically exposed tactical weaknesses in the Russian military establishment.

Reports said that a serious mistake made by a Russian general had put the Russian border at risk, allowing Ukrainian forces to enter Russia’s Kursk region on August 6.

According to the reports, the Russian General Alexander Lapin, who was recently appointed to oversee security in the region, decided to dismantle the council tasked with maintaining security in the region in the months preceding the Ukrainian incursion.

This council included military officers, with local and regional security officials.

The report added that General Lapin justified his decision by saying that the Russian army alone has the strength, and resources to protect the border!

However, this decision left a huge gap in the Russian border defenses, which collapsed when the surprise Ukrainian attack occurred, leading to a state of chaos among the Russian forces.

For its part, Kiev has repeatedly declared that it has taken control of hundreds of square miles of Russian territory.

In contrast, the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, former president, Dmitry Medvedev stressed on Wednesday that the Ukrainian incursion into the Kursk region means that there will be no talks between Moscow and Kiev until Ukraine is completely defeated.

“The empty chatter of the mediators is over, things are clear to everyone,” Medvedev wrote on Telegram.

Medvedev stressed that negotiations won’t resume until Kiev is completely defeated.

The Ukrainian forces took advantage of the element of surprise when they penetrated into the Russian border on August 6, then gradually deployed in the Kursk region amidst an almost complete absence of Russian resistance, given the weak deployment of its forces in that area.

The incursion has angered Moscow, with Russian President Vladimir Putin vowing to make Kiev pay a price.
