The Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered on Wednesday, the Admiral Gorshkov frigate that is equipped with Tsirkon missiles to enter into military service.

The Russian president put the new Tsirkon hypersonic missile into service as his country’s war effort in Ukraine faltered.

“I confirm that such a powerful weapon will allow us to reliably protect Russia from external threats and secure the national interests of our country,” Putin said in a televised video link from the Kremlin, on the occasion of launching the missiles on the Admiral Goroshkov frigate.

The frigate is part of Russia’s Northern Fleet and will be sent on a long cruise to the Atlantic and Indian oceans to show Russia’s naval power.

The frigate, which was prepared for service in 2018, is the first frigate to be equipped with the new missiles.

Tsirkon missiles have a range of more than 500 kilometers and are mainly used for anti-ship missions.
