Poll: Most Germans feel their country is worse off since Merkel’s departure
Most Germans feel their country is worse off since Angela Merkel, a former conservative chancellor, has passed away, according to a new poll by research firm youGov.
According to the survey, 61% of respondents believe that the situation has worsened since Merkel left politics in 2021, while 25% believe that things remain almost the same.
The United Kingdom-based international company said 2,030 people took part in the online survey from June 28 to July 3.
The sample was selected to reflect population criteria, such as age, gender, religion, voting behavior, education and political interests; therefore, it represented voters aged 18 and over.
The poll found that those who see a decline in the situation largely attribute this to the role played by Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s three-party center-left coalition government.
Specifically, 28% of respondent’s attribute this to the bad government led by Scholz and 15% to external factors.
More than half of the participants believe that both factors played a role in the deterioration.
It’s noteworthy that Angela Merkel, who took over the chancellor in 2005 and held it for 16 years, celebrates her 70th birthday on Wednesday, as she was the first woman to hold the chancellorship in Germany.
