Politico newspaper reported, citing diplomats, that the European Union is preparing to begin formal negotiations with Ukraine regarding accession, and an official announcement is expected to be made next December.

Politico explained that the European Union is preparing to begin negotiations with Ukraine regarding its future accession, and an official announcement is expected in December.

Brussels is preparing to give Kiev the green light on this issue by the end of 2023.

The European Union Ambassador in Kiev, Katarina Mathernova, said earlier that Kiev could join the European Union in 2030, if the internal reforms that must be implemented are completed.

Last month, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed confidence that the European Union would be able to continue its successful activities in an expanded manner.

She also noted that there is a whole set of standards related to the judicial and economic system, which must be met and implemented, in order to join the single market and the European Union.

José Manuel Barroso, who headed the European Commission in 2004-2014, previously stressed that the European Union must undertake controversial reforms to integrate Ukraine into the Union.

Polish Minister of Agriculture and Food Robert Telus said that Ukraine’s accession to the European Union won’t be possible until Kiev fulfills certain conditions regarding agriculture.

It’s noteworthy that on February 28, 2022, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky signed the application for Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

At the summit held in Brussels on June 23 of the same year, the heads of state and government of the European Union agreed to grant candidate status for EU membership to both Ukraine and Moldova.
