NATO to open an office in Jordan

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates announced on Thursday the establishment of a NATO liaison office in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, with the aim of strengthening joint cooperation between the Jordan and the alliance.

The ministry issued a joint statement with NATO on the decision to open the office in the Jordanian capital, Amman, stating, “At the 2024 NATO Summit in Washington, the allies adopted an action plan to enhance cooperation in the MENA region, to keep pace with security developments at the regional and global levels”.

“This plan underscores NATO’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with its southern neighbors, including the establishment of a NATO liaison office in Jordan, the first of its kind in the region”.

The decision to open the office, announced in the final communiqué of the NATO summit in Lithuania in July 2023, represents a milestone in the strategic partnership between Jordan and NATO, as the alliance recognizes the pivotal role of Jordan in achieving regional and international stability, and commends its efforts in combating terrorism and violent extremism, the statement noted.

The statement said the office would contribute to “strengthening political dialogue and cooperation in areas of common interest between NATO and Jordan”.

The NATO office will also assist in the implementation of partnership programs and activities that include holding conferences and training courses in areas such as strategic analysis, contingency planning, public diplomacy, cybersecurity, climate change management, crisis management and civil defense, according to the statement.
