More than half of Germans expect the AfD party to win elections in several states
The results of an opinion poll revealed that most Germans expect the Alternative for Germany party (AfD) to win an absolute majority in at least one of the three eastern German states that will witness parliamentary elections this year, which therefore means that the right-wing populist party will win for the first time the position of prime minister of a German state.
The results of the poll conducted by the YouGov opinion poll for the German News Agency (dpa) showed that 53% of Germans consider such a scenario possible, compared to 32% who ruled out its occurrence.
The percentage of those who believe that the AfD will come to power and win the first position of prime minister in one of the three states this year reached 58% among citizens of the east of the country.
It should be noted that parliamentary elections are scheduled to be held in the states of Saxony, Thuringia, and Brandenburg, all located in eastern Germany, in September of this year.
Opinion polls indicate that the AfD is ahead of other parties in the three states, and in some cases the lead will be significantly.
The state of Brandenburg is currently governed by a tripartite coalition headed by Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democratic Party, with the participation of the Christian Democratic Party and the Green Party.
The state of Saxony is governed by a tripartite coalition headed by the Christian Party and the participation of the Socialist Party and the Green Party.
The state of Thuringia is governed by a tripartite coalition headed by the Left Party and the participation of the Socialist Party and the Green Party.
It’s worth noting that all parties represented in the parliaments of the three states currently rule out entering into a coalition with the Alternative Party, which means that the Alternative Party won’t be able to win the position of head of the government of a state unless it obtains an absolute majority in the parliament of this state.
However, the results of the poll also showed that 42% of Germans don’t believe in the continuation of the position of the Christian Democratic Party and its younger brother, the Bavarian Social Christian Party, in ruling out entering into a coalition with the alternative, compared to 36% who believe that the two parties will maintain this position.
Regarding the European elections scheduled to be held in Germany on the ninth of next June, the results showed that only 28% of Germans believe that the alternative winning the highest percentage of votes in these elections is possible, compared to 57% who rule out this happening, and the results showed that 56% are confident that the Union will win.
Christian party had the highest percentage of votes, compared to 20% in favor of the Socialist Party and 11% in favor of the Green Party.
The results showed that 27% of those surveyed believe that the Alternative Party will decide the federal parliamentary elections scheduled to be held in the fall of 2025, compared to 56% who considered this scenario unrealistic.
The results revealed that 59% of those surveyed believe that the Christian Union will decide these elections in its favor, compared to 16% who said that Scholz’s Socialist Party will decide it, and 9% believed that the Green Party would have the highest percentage of votes in these elections.
