Mike Pence enters the race for the Republican nomination in the US presidential elections 2024
Former US Vice President Mike Pence announced on Monday, that he will enter the race to run for the Republican Party in the 2024 presidential elections, paving the way for a confrontation with former President Donald Trump.
Pence’s campaign has submitted a declaration of candidacy to the Federal Election Commission.
According to three informed sources who told Reuters last week that Pence would launch his campaign with a video and a speech in Iowa on Wednesday.
The move puts Pence in confrontation with Trump, who once loyally supported him, but refused to endorse him when the former president tried to annul the results of the 2020 elections won by Democrat Joe Biden.
The former Indiana governor is increasingly distancing himself from Trump, saying the former president’s encouragement of the rioters who attacked the US Capitol on January 6, 2021 endangered him and members of his family who were inside the building at the time.
Pence joins a growing group of contenders for the Republican nomination, including Trump, Senator Tim Scott and former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley.
