Meeting took place between Syrian transitional President and the foreign minister with the newly appointed US envoy to Syria
The Syrian presidency revealed details of the meeting held in Istanbul between President Ahmad al Sharaa, Foreign Minister Asaad al Shaibani, and US Special Envoy to Syria Tom Barrack.
The meeting comes as part of Damascus’s new diplomatic efforts to rebuild its relations with Washington.
US sanctions on Syria were the main focus of the discussion, with President al Sharaa stressing the continuing negative impact of these sanctions in hindering economic recovery efforts within the country.
For his part, Barrack confirmed that the United States has already begun implementing a series of measures to ease sanctions, in compliance with President Donald Trump’s recent decision, with a view to fully lifting them in the near future.
The meeting also addressed possibilities for supporting foreign investment in Syria, particularly in the energy and infrastructure sectors.
The Syrian delegation expressed its willingness to provide extensive facilities to investors, with the aim of supporting reconstruction and creating a stable and attractive economic environment.
In the political context, Sharaa affirmed Syria’s commitment to its territorial integrity and its rejection of any partition plans, noting the importance of adhering to the 1974 Separation of Forces Agreement with Israel to ensure stability in the south.
Regarding the issue of chemical weapons, the two sides expressed agreement on the need to completely eliminate them, in accordance with international agreements, and in cooperation with the international community.
The two sides discussed opportunities for security cooperation to confront regional challenges, including combating terrorism and border control.
The need to reach a comprehensive agreement with the Syria Democratic Forces (SDF) that ensures the return of full Syrian sovereignty was also addressed, while exploring mechanisms for integrating these forces into official state institutions.
