Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said during a press conference on Saturday at the conclusion of the Group of Seven summit that Israel had fallen into the trap set by Hamas in its war on Gaza.

Despite stressing the need to remember the October 7 attacks, Meloni stated that Israel seems to have fallen into the trap of Hamas that was aimed at isolating it and seems to have succeeded.

The Italian Prime Minister stated that peace must be worked for in the Middle East.

“Now we must work for peace… Which means dialogue… We must work for peace and recognize Israel’s right to be secure and to live in peace and the right of Palestinians to a state of their own where they can live in peace… That’s the only way to solve the problem”.

Asked whether Italy should stop selling weapons to Israel, Meloni said, “It seems that Israel has fallen into Hamas’s trap of isolating Israel”.

“We’re working for Israel’s security, that’s what Italy does,” she added.

The G7 summit on Friday united supported the US proposal adopted by the Security Council for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of all hostages.

The joint statement of the G7 summit added that Israel must fully comply with international law in all circumstances.
