Istanbul Mayor submits official application for his party to compete with Erdogan for the presidency of Türkiye
Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu announced that he has submitted an official request to his Republican People’s Party (CHP) to be its candidate in the upcoming Turkish presidential elections, which Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to run for on behalf of his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
İmamoğlu posted a tweet with a video on his X account, in which he said: “We’re embarking on a journey with our nation that deserves to live humanely and longs for freedom, justice, prosperity and unity… We’re embarking on a journey to make our state democratic and strong, our nation rich and peaceful, and our citizens equal and free”.
The mayor of Istanbul pledged to implement parliamentary democracy, separation of powers and checks and balances mechanisms as soon as possible, noting that he would turn political competition into a fair, civilized and honest race in the presence of the nation.
