Haaretz newspaper published an article stating that the coffins that arrived in Israel today will carry the meanings of defeat that millions of Israelis have felt for several months, as the bodies of the four detainees are closely linked to the failure of October 7.

Israeli writer Alon Idan said that Hamas bears responsibility for killing the four prisoners who were abandoned by their government.

Idan wrote that the deep sadness that has overshadowed Israeli public opinion didn’t only occur on October 7, but continued in the days, weeks and months that followed, due to the government’s negligence.

He added that because of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s decision to pursue a policy of survival and continuing to fight, the coffins that will arrive today will carry inside them corruption corpses.

He pointed out that the stories of Eli Feldstein and the publications in the German newspaper Bild, which were aimed at torpedoing the prisoner exchange deal, are enough to make Netanyahu walk around for the rest of his life with the mark of Cain on his forehead and the mark of shame on his heart.

Idan continued that there are question marks about the leading values, priorities, and purity of intention – as he put it – so it’s ironic that the many legal cases that are accumulating around Netanyahu and his entourage are what create a kind of moral deterioration.

He added that there are matters such as humanity, mercy, responsibility and honesty that shouldn’t depend on evidence, proof or interrogation records.

They are values that are too deep and important for a court to decide, and the same applies to the government investigation committee.

“A legitimate discussion of responsibility and blame can only be had when the remnants of morality are forced into the cracks of the floor tiles covered with a carpet made of blood,” Idan wrote.

He added that the coffins that were transferred to Israel today contain the bodies of people – including children – who were not given the clear information that those responsible for their kidnapping would place morality before their eyes as the sole criterion that easily outweighs all other considerations related to costs and benefits.

He concluded that the prisoners killed in the coffins were deprived of compassion, humanity and mutual security, and were left to die for the first time on October 7, then they were left to die day after day, until their real death came.
