Israeli Prime Minister: The IDF’s attacks on Syria aim to maintain a demilitarized zone in southwestern Syria and protect the Druze
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Tuesday that the goal of the Israeli army’s attacks on Syria this morning was to preserve southwestern Syria as a demilitarized zone and protect the Druze.
This came in a speech delivered by Netanyahu during his inspection of the Hasmonean Infantry Brigade in central Israel, which is designated to accommodate Haredi soldiers. His press office broadcast the speech on X.
Netanyahu said, “We’ve been operating in Syria (in the Sweida region) since this morning, and we have a commitment to maintaining the southwestern area of Syria as a demilitarized zone on the Israeli border”.
He continued, “We’ll not allow a return to a situation in which they establish Lebanon again in Syria,” referring to Hezbollah.
He added, “We’re committed to protecting the Druze population, and we are doing so through strong operations… I hope we won’t have to do more”.
Israeli aircraft attacked Syrian tanks on the outskirts of Sweida, following a major escalation in the region.
