Brining thousands of documents belongs to spy Eli Cohen to Israel, nearly 60 years after his execution, marked an important closure for his family.

Baruch Yadid, an Arab affairs analyst for the Israeli i24NEWS channel, revealed new details about the secret move that allowed the documents to be brought in.

A Syrian source told i24NEWS that a helicopter landed in As Sweida, southern Syria, on May 2nd, carrying Eli Cohen’s archive, as a signal from the government and a gesture from Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa to Israel and the United States.

The Syrian source also pointed out that this prevents the need to fly over Jordanian or Lebanese territory.

As mentioned, when the helicopter landed in Syria, many in the area—as well as in Israel—questioned the purpose of the landing, as it was reported, among other things, that it was delivering weapons and food to the Druze living there, and that it was smuggling the community’s leader in the area to Israel.

Now it has emerged from the source that the helicopter arrived to collect the archive, which was secured by a commander of Al Sharaa-affiliated armed forces.

These details are consistent with recent reports of good talks taking place in Azerbaijan between Israel and Syria, under Turkish auspices.
