Israeli Channel i24: Trump intends to meet with the Syrian transitional President during his visit to Saudi Arabia
Israeli channel i24 reported that US President Donald Trump is preparing to meet with Syrian transitional President Ahmed al Sharaa during his upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia in mid-May.
According to the Israeli channel, the meeting was arranged through direct mediation by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, a move that reflects a new direction in US policy towards Syria.
Earlier, the White House announced a tour by the US president that will include Saudi Arabia and other countries in the Middle East, without revealing precise details about the meeting schedule.
White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt said, “The president will visit Saudi Arabia in May, and we will provide you with dates and details as soon as they are confirmed”.
The US position on Syrian President Ahmad al Sharaa remains unclear, as Washington seeks to monitor the new administration’s policies while keeping channels of dialogue open.
It’s worth noting that the United States held its first official talks with al Sharaa in December 2024, when a US diplomatic delegation, headed by Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs Barbara Leaf, met with the Syrian president in Damascus.
During the meeting, the US side expressed support for the steps taken by the new Syrian administration, particularly with regard to promoting stability, achieving economic development, and ensuring broader political representation for all components of the Syrian people.
Washington also emphasized the need to form an inclusive Syrian government that reduces the president’s powers to ensure true representation of all political and social groups in the country.
