The Israeli government claimed on Monday that it would reduce its occupation of areas in southern Lebanon if Beirut took the necessary steps to disarm Hezbollah.

“Israel appreciates the important step taken by the Lebanese government, led by President Aoun and Prime Minister Nawaf Salam,” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said in a statement.

He added, “The recent decision taken by the Cabinet to work towards disarming Hezbollah by the end of 2025 was a very important decision”.

On August 5, the Lebanese Cabinet approved the state’s monopoly on weapons, including Hezbollah’s, and tasked the army with developing a plan to this end before the end of this month and implementing it by the end of 2025.

Netanyahu’s office considered that this decision represents a crucial opportunity for Lebanon to restore its sovereignty and the authority of its governmental institutions, army, and government, free from the influence of non-state actors.

“In light of this important development, Israel stands ready to support Lebanon in its efforts to disarm Hezbollah and to work together for a more secure and stable future for both countries,” the statement said.

Netanyahu’s office statement continued, “If the Lebanese army takes the necessary steps to implement Hezbollah’s disarmament, Israel will take reciprocal measures, including a gradual reduction of the Israeli military presence, in coordination with the US-led security mechanism”.
