The Israeli Foreign Ministry informed the United Nations of the cancellation of the agreement regulating the operations of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) in Israel and the occupied territories, which include the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

The official Israeli Broadcasting Corporation reported on Monday morning that “the Israeli Foreign Ministry officially informed the United Nations on Sunday evening of the cancellation of the agreement signed in 1967 that regulates UNRWA operations in Israel, the West Bank and Gaza”.

Last week, the Israeli Knesset adopted a law banning the activities of UNRWA in Israel and occupied East Jerusalem, which is considered the backbone of humanitarian aid in the Gaza Strip, which is witnessing a war between Israel and Hamas.

A second law prohibits Israeli officials from working with UNRWA, which would severely disrupt its activities.

UNRWA was established in December 1949 by the United Nations General Assembly in the wake of the first Arab-Israeli conflict (Nakba), shortly after the establishment of the State of Israel in May 1948.

The UN agency primarily runs health centers and schools in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and in Arab countries such as Lebanon and Syria.
