Iran has rejected calls for a temporary truce, insisting that any solution must include guarantees against future attacks, as well as compensation for damage sustained during the conflict.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Saturday that Iran isn’t seeking a ceasefire, but rather a complete, comprehensive and permanent end to the war, according to Japan’s Kyodo news agency.

Iran hasn’t closed the strategic waterway, but has imposed restrictions on ships belonging to countries involved in attacks against Iran, while providing assistance to other vessels amid growing security concerns, Araghchi said.

He noted that Iran is ready to ensure the safe passage of countries such as Japan, if it coordinates with Tehran.

Japan relies on the Middle East for more than 90% of its crude oil imports, most of which pass through the strait.

He said the issue of cross-strait navigation by Japanese ships had been discussed in his recent talks with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, noting that discussions were ongoing but details could not be disclosed.

Araghchi described the war as imposed on Iran, saying that Tehran was engaged in negotiations with the United States when the attacks began.

“This was an illegal and unjustified act of aggression,” he said, adding that Iran’s response was self-defense and would continue as long as it takes.

He called on the international community, including Japan, to take a stand against the attacks, expressing appreciation for Tokyo’s traditionally balanced and fair stance and its long-standing friendly relations with Iran.

He noted that many countries are trying to mediate to end the conflict, and said Iran is open to any initiative and is ready to consider proposals.

He explained that despite continuing diplomatic efforts, the United States hasn’t yet shown its readiness for a real solution.
