Iran’s military chief of staff has threatened to strike all of Israel’s infrastructure if they attack his country in response to the Islamic Republic’s firing of around 200 ballistic missiles, many of them hypersonic, at its arch-enemy on Tuesday evening.

Baqeri said on state television, “the missile attack on Israel on Tuesday evening will be repeated with greater force, and all the infrastructure of the Zionist entity will be targeted”.

The Islamic Republic confirmed that it launched 200 hypersonic ballistic missiles at Israel.

Iranian state television said that two hundred missiles were fired at Israel, which had announced that Tehran had targeted it with about 180 missiles and that the majority of these missiles were successfully intercepted.

In contrast, the Revolutionary Guards confirmed that it used Fateh hypersonic ballistic missiles in this attack, confirming that 90% of these missiles successfully hit their targets.

In June 2023, Iran unveiled the Fateh ballistic missile, a medium-range hypersonic missile that reaches a speed of 15 times the speed of sound.

The then-president, Ebrahim Raisi, stressed that this weapon would enhance Iran’s deterrent power and bring peace and stability to the countries of the region.

Hypersonic missiles fly through the atmosphere at very high speed and at low altitude, and are capable of maneuvering, making their path difficult to predict and therefore intercept.
