Iran announced: Our membership in BRICS has officially begun
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani said on Monday that his country’s membership in the BRICS group officially began as of today (January 1st).
Kanani indicated in a press conference held in the capital, Tehran, that his country had been accepted as a member of BRICS within the scope of a previously signed agreement, and that official membership began as of January 1.
BRICS is a bloc founded in 2006, and includes China, Brazil, Russia, India, and South Africa.
Last August, it invited 6 countries, namely Saudi Arabia, the Emirates, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and Argentina, to join it starting at the beginning of the year 2024.
Regarding Armenian-Azerbaijani relations, Kanani said They always support the development of relations between Yerevan and Baku.
On the other hand, Kanani announced the release of Spanish citizen Santiago Sanchez, who was detained in Iran, and that he would return to his country.
He explained, “The release of Sanchez comes within the framework of the humanitarian approach and the friendly and historical relations between the two countries, and was done in accordance with the law”.
Sanchez’s family announced that their son was trying to go on foot to attend the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar, but news of him stopped after his arrival in Iran.
Sanchez arrived in Iran in September 2022, and was arrested during the outbreak of protests in Iran following the death of the young woman, Mahsa Amini.
On September 16, 2022, protests broke out across Iran following the death of Amini (22), 3 days after she was arrested by the moral police responsible for monitoring women’s dress codes.
