i24NEWS: The Syrian president will meet the Israeli prime minister on the sideline of the UN General Assembly in September
A source close to Syrian President Ahmed al Sharaa told the Israeli i24NEWS that he is expected to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in the United States, ahead of the UN General Assembly in September.
The Syrian source reported that during the meeting, which will be held at the White House, Netanyahu and al Sharaa will sign a security agreement under the auspices of US President Trump.
According to the source, this would be the first step towards a peace and normalization agreement between the two countries.
Additionally, sources in the UAE told i24NEWS that the UAE is continuing its intensive mediation efforts between Syria and Israel, noting that the Emirati role is being undertaken with Saudi knowledge.
Meanwhile, according to sources, the main obstacle is Israel’s unwillingness to commit to withdrawing its forces from the areas it seized in the Golan Heights after Assad’s fall in the coming months, as they believe that al Sharaa has yet to fully control all armed factions in Syria, particularly in southern Syria.
