Germany affirmed on Tuesday that Israel has the right to defend itself, but it also has the duty to respect, in its ongoing military operation in Jenin, the occupied West Bank, the principle of proportionality enshrined in international law.

“We’re following with great concern the situation in Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories,” the German Foreign Ministry said in a statement, stressing that Israel, as a whole state, has the right to defend itself against terrorism, but it also has the duty to respect the principle of proportionality enshrined in international law.

The German Foreign Ministry condemned the “terrorist attack” carried out by a Palestinian in Tel Aviv on Tuesday, it called on “everyone who has responsibility for this situation to make every effort to calm the tense security situation and prevent further violence”.

Last Monday, Israeli forces, backed by warplanes and drones, stormed the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank, and bombed it with live ammunition, killing 10 and injuring 100 others, including 20 in serious condition, in addition to destroying homes and infrastructure, and cutting off electricity and water to the camp.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that the army’s “home and garden” military operation in the city of Jenin will continue until its goal is achieved.

“We’re now defining a new equation in the face of terrorism… The basic principle guiding us is simple, whoever kills Israelis, whoever plots to kill us, his place is either in the grave or in prison, and whoever targets us, whoever sends terrorism against us, his blood will be spilled”.
