German Chancellor: Germany will transform the army into a role model within NATO
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced his intention to develop the German army into a “role model” military force within NATO.
During his meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Berlin on Wednesday, Merz said, “We’ll work on purchasing new equipment on a large scale, and in this regard, we will pay special attention to modern technologies”.
Merz’s remarks came before he and Rutte headed to a celebration marking 70 years since Germany joined NATO.
Merz said, “Germany has been a member of NATO for 70 years, and the alliance has played a major role in ensuring that we have lived in this country for three generations in freedom, peace, and prosperity”.
Merz promised that large-scale procurement operations for the military would be conducted in a way that strengthens German and European defense industries, emphasizing that Germany would coordinate closely with its European partners to implement procurement processes in a better and more integrated manner.
He noted that the focus would be on simplification, standardization, and achieving what is known as economies of scale, or reducing costs through collective procurement of large quantities.
