German Chancellor: Biden will win the elections

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has signaled strong support and confidence in US President Joe Biden’s leadership amid growing concerns about Biden’s mental acuity and the specter of former President Donald Trump’s return to office.

In an interview with media outlets, including Politco, on the sidelines of the G7 summit in Italy on Saturday, Scholz stressed that Biden knows exactly what he is doing and can provide decisive leadership as the group of global leaders faces a complex web of problems and issues, including a hotly contested election that threatens to upend the international status quo.

“I think Joe Biden is a very clear person, he knows exactly what he’s doing, he’s one of the most experienced politicians in the world, especially when it comes to international politics,” Scholz said, praising the president’s presence at the G7 conference.

“In a difficult situation like this, where there is a war here in Europe, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and where there are many other conflicts around the world, this is an asset and a good thing, so I can only say that this man knows exactly what he is doing,” he said.

Scholz’s comments come at a time when the United States and its international allies are on high alert as global conflicts continue to escalate, including Russia’s war in Ukraine and Israel’s war in Gaza, and complex problems such as climate change have become more urgent.

In the same interview, Scholz addressed concerns that Germany could block the latest round of EU sanctions against Russia, stressing that the package isn’t banned but is under discussion.

Adding to the uncertainty at the moment is that the recent EU elections signal a shift to the far right, leading to concerns about continued international support for Ukraine.

The impending US presidential election also casts a shadow over the G7 meeting, as Biden faces US voters worried about inflation and immigration and frustrated with his vacillating foreign policy in Gaza and Ukraine.

If Trump beats Biden in November, the former president has promised to throw US international commitments out the window, including threatening to withdraw from NATO if partners don’t pay.

Trump’s comments on NATO sparked much debate among leaders about the United States’ possible abdication of international responsibility, but Scholz appears to have ignored those concerns.

“I think it’s very likely that the incumbent president will win the election,” Scholz said, adding that he believed the rampant speculation about the outcome of the US election was a bit strange.

Underscoring his confidence in Biden’s leadership, Scholz pointed to significant strides in domestic and foreign policy during his presidency, which he believes boost Biden’s electoral chances.

“He pursued a policy that led to proper economic development in the country, helped ensure that peace and security are in safe hands, that the United States is already playing its part in the world and third, of course, because he is committed to solidarity and cohesion in his country,” Scholz said.
