Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived in Cairo on Wednesday evening on the first visit of its kind by an Iranian president to Egypt in about 11 years.

The Iranian Mehr News Agency reported that the Iranian President arrived in Cairo to attend and deliver a speech at the G8 Islamic Summit for Developing Economic Cooperation scheduled for Thursday, without specifying the duration of his visit.

In addition to his participation in the G8 summit, Pezeshkian will hold meetings with some leaders and officials participating in the summit, to discuss bilateral, regional and international issues, according to what the Iranian News Agency (IRNA) reported on Wednesday evening.

Pezeshkian’s visit is the first of its kind by an Iranian president to Egypt in 11 years, when former President Ahmadinejad visited Cairo in February 2013.

Ahmadinejad’s visit at the time was the first visit by an Iranian president since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, which was the reason for severing diplomatic relations with Egypt in 1980.

They were then resumed again after 11 years, but at the level of the chargé d’affaires and interest offices.

In May 2023, then-Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi directed the Foreign Ministry to take necessary measures to strengthen relations with Egypt, according to what the Iranian Tasnim News Agency reported at the time.
