The Turkish President considered that Russia could be relied upon as much as the West could be relied upon, pointing out Russia’s geographical proximity to his country and the common history that unites them.

When Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was asked about the difference between Russia and the West on Monday, he said that there is no difference in my view.

Erdogan’s comments on US Public Broadcasting Corporation (PBS) followed a question about Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Black Sea grain deal, which Putin exited in July in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine.

The Turkish President added, “For the past fifty years, we have been waiting at the doorstep of the European Union, meanwhile, I trust Russia as much as I trust the West”.

“Russia happens to be one of my closest neighbors and we have a common history,” Erdogan added.

Ankara believes that good political relations with the European Union, the United States, or Russia are based on win-win calculations, which means that it will continue to strengthen them with everyone.

Last week, the Turkish president threatened to secede from the European Union after a European Parliament report said Ankara’s accession to the bloc – stalled for decades – should be halted due to the country’s human rights record and rule of law.
