The Cuban president reveals the three scenarios the US administration is considering against Cuba
Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel said in an interview published Monday that the United States is considering three scenarios against Cuba: provoking a social explosion through economic pressure, taking control of the economy, or resorting to military aggression.
“One scenario is to provoke a social explosion by strangling the economy, and for this social explosion to give the United States the opportunity, under the pretext of humanitarian aid, to intervene in the country,” Diaz-Canel explained in an interview with the Spanish website eldiario.es, published Monday on the Cuban presidency’s website.
Relations between Cuba and the United States have deteriorated significantly since January, following Washington’s imposition of an oil embargo on the island and rounds of sanctions targeting Cuban entities and officials, in addition to the US Justice Department indicting former President Raul Castro in a case dating back to 1996.
The Trump administration considers the communist island, located 150 kilometers off the coast of Florida, an extraordinary threat to US national security.
Despite these tensions, both governments maintain diplomatic contact; Díaz-Canel outlined a second scenario based on forced dialogue coupled with maximum pressure on the island’s economy.
According to him, this strategy aims to control the Cuban economy in order to ultimately change the political system.
This scenario comes as several foreign companies, including international hotel groups, have announced partial or total withdrawals from Cuba for fear of possible US sanctions.
The Cuban president added, “The third scenario is military aggression”.
Diaz-Canel pointed out that these hypotheses weren’t invented by the Cubans, but are based on repeated statements by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and US President Donald Trump.
Faced with these possibilities, the Cuban president stressed the need for the country to prepare to defend itself, in order to avoid any surprise and any defeat.
