Egypt to acquire an advanced aircraft from South Korea sparks the growing tensions with Israel
Military reports revealed advanced negotiations between Egypt and South Korea to purchase advanced FA-50 Fighting Eagle attack and training aircraft.
Reports confirm that the deal could significantly transform the Egyptian Air Force, prompting subsequent reactions in Israeli circles.
According to the Israeli military magazine IsraelDefense, Egypt is close to concluding an agreement with South Korea to supply a large number of FA-50 aircraft, a multi-role platform with advanced offensive and training capabilities.
The Israeli magazine indicated that the deal may also include anti-tank missiles, bolstering Egypt’s military capabilities.
Egypt’s interest in these aircraft stems from their distinctive air show during the 2022 Pyramids Air Show, where the South Korean Black Eagles performed a display over the Pyramids, becoming the first foreign team to perform at this historic site.
Reports indicate that Egypt intends to purchase up to 70 FA-50 aircraft, which are compatible with Egypt’s existing fleet of F-16 aircraft, sharing more than 70% of their spare parts, facilitating maintenance and operation.
Italy had previously offered to supply 20 M-346 aircraft, but the Korean aircraft appears to have received priority due to its operational advantages and integration with existing systems.
The upgraded FA-50 Block 20 version also boasts capabilities close to those of the F-16C/D, making it a strategic option for Egypt.
These developments coincided with Israeli reports expressing concern about the strengthening of the Egyptian military presence in Sinai.
Israeli security sources as accusing Egypt of violating the military annex to the peace agreement by strengthening its military infrastructure in Sinai.
An Israeli security source said “Egyptian activities constitute a major breach of the agreement,” considering the deployment of additional forces in Sinai a “security problem”.
