Dozens of victims and injured in a bombing that targeted a church in Damascus

At least 30 Christians were killed and injured in a terrorist attack on a church in the Dwel’a neighborhood of Damascus.

In details, a violent explosion rocked Mar Elias Church in the Dwel’a neighborhood of Damascus, caused by a suicide bombing inside the church during Sunday mass, as the church was crowded with worshippers at the time of the bombing, in what was the first such attack of its kind in the Syrian capital in years.

Meanwhile, the attack claimed the lives of 20 civilians and 52 wounded, according to an offical toll, as rescue teams from the Syrian Civil Defense continue to recover bodies from the scene.

For its part, the Syrian Ministry of Interior stated that, “A suicide bomber affiliated with the terrorist organization ISIS entered St. Elias Church in the Dwel’a neighborhood of Damascus, opened fire, and then detonated himself with an explosive vest”.

The statement continues, “Initial information indicates that a number of civilians were killed and others were injured… Security forces rushed to the scene, cordoned off the entire area, and specialized teams began collecting evidence and investigating the circumstances of the attack”.
