Donald Trump is facing a serious accusation “conspiracy against the United States”
Former US president, Donald Trump was charged Tuesday over his efforts to reverse the 2020 presidential election, the most serious legal threat yet for the former president as he campaigns to return to the White House.
Following an investigation supervised by Special Prosecutor Jake Smith, the frontrunner in the Republican primary was accused of “conspiracy against the United States”, obstruction of an official procedure, and violation of electoral rights.
The accusations came as he campaigned to return to his previous post during elections next year.
Trump leads the race for the Republican nomination to run in the elections.
Smith said in a press conference that the attack on the Capitol in 2021 was fueled by Trump’s “lies”, stressing that he would seek a “quick trial” for the former president.
Smith stressed that the defendant, Trump, “obstructed an essential function in the US government’s acceptance process, which is to compile the count and certify the results of the presidential elections”.
He stated that the indictment is just an allegation, and that “the accused is innocent until proven guilty, beyond a reasonable doubt, in a court of law”.
It was decided to summon Trump to appear before the Federal Court in Washington on August 3, and assign the case to US District Court Judge Tanya Chutkan.
Chutkan, was appointed by former US President Barack Obama, is the only federal judge in Washington, DC, to sentence those accused in the January 6, 2021 Capitol storming to harsher sentences than the government requested.
Six people have been charged with conspiring with Trump in an attempt to steal the results of the 2020 election.
The indictment against Trump is 45 pages long and includes four counts related to the 2020 election.
Earlier Tuesday, Trump said he expected the federal prosecutor to soon charge him with a new criminal charge, which has already happened.
In a post on his “Truth Social” platform, Trump wrote, “I heard that deranged Jack Smith, in order to interfere in the 2024 presidential election, will bring a new false accusation against your favorite president, me, at 17:00 (21:00 GMT)”.
Smith has previously accused Trump of mishandling classified government documents, and is investigating efforts by the former president to reverse the results of the November 2020 elections.
Two weeks ago, Trump said he had received a letter from prosecutors indicating that he was likely to be charged.
A criminal offense against the background of his supporters storming the Congressional headquarters on January 6, 2021.
Trump asked, “Why didn’t they do it two and a half years ago? Why did they wait so long?” He added, “Because they wanted it to happen in the middle of my campaign,” denouncing the “misconduct of the prosecution”.
On the other hand, the Democrats says that the US President is under the authority of the law, commenting on the new accusation, a statement was issued by the Democratic leaders in the Senate and House of Representatives, Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jeffries, after Trump’s conviction, “The insurrection on January 6, 2021 was one of the saddest days in American history, personally orchestrated by Donald Trump and fueled by his big, insidious lie in an attempt to undermine the 2020 election. In a deadly attempt to overturn the will of the American people and derail the peaceful transfer of power, the Capitol Building – a symbol of homeland and democracy – was exposed. American – to attack thousands of vicious and violent troublemakers.
Trump’s third indictment demonstrates in harrowing detail that the violence that day was the culmination of a months-long criminal plot led by the former president to challenge democracy and overthrow the will of the American people. This indictment is the most serious and significant yet, and it will serve as a stark reminder to generations of Americans that no one, including the President of the United States, is above the law. The legal process must continue to move forward without any outside interference”.
