Devlet Bahçeli: Netanyahu’s trial in The Hague is a new condition for Sweden’s accession to NATO

The leader of the Turkish National Movement Party, Devlet Bahçeli, stated that the conditions for Ankara’s approval of Sweden’s request for NATO membership are peace between Israel and Palestine, Israel’s payment of compensation, and Netanyahu’s trial.
Bahçeli said in an interview with the Turkish local Türkgün newspaper, that his position on the Swedish request is negative, recalling the numerous incidents of desecration of the Qur’an in Sweden.
He added, “For us, desecrating the Qur’an is an insult to all Muslims… We’ll agree to Sweden’s membership in NATO if a permanent peace is achieved between Israel and Palestine and a Palestinian state is recognized on the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital and enjoys territorial integrity, and if Israel agrees to pay compensation and Netanyahu is tried in The Hague”.
He said that the parties that expect Sweden’s membership in the alliance must implement all these conditions.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Friday that he could not approve Sweden’s membership without the approval of the country’s parliament, indicating that he also expected a “solidarity contribution” from the United States.
He stated that about 3,000 Turkish lawyers filed lawsuits with the International Court in The Hague against Netanyahu and other Israeli politicians.
The media quoted a senior US State Department employee as saying that Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan told his counterparts in NATO countries that Türkiye is actively working to accept Sweden’s request to join NATO before the end of this year, without mentioning a specific date for that.
