The Syrian government announced on Tuesday the appointment of Kurdish military commander Sipan Hamo to the position of deputy minister of defense for the affairs of the eastern region, in a step that comes within the implementation of the agreement that ended military confrontations between Syrian forces and Kurdish factions last January.

The Syrian official media quoted the director of the information and communication department at the Ministry of Defense, Assem Ghalioun, as saying that the decision stipulates that Hamo will be assigned the duties of assistant minister of defense in charge of the eastern region of the Syrian Arab Republic.

Sipan Hamo is one of Syria’s most prominent Kurdish military commanders, having previously led the YPG, which played a key role in the fight against ISIS, and was involved in negotiations with the Syrian government.

These units formed the backbone of the Syria Democratic Forces, which signed an agreement with Damascus to integrate their forces into state institutions.
