British Defense Secretary: Russian forces are ringing an alarm bell to Ukraine’s allies
British Defense Secretary Grant Shapps said Wednesday that Russia’s gains in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region should serve as a “wake-up call”, adding that Kiev’s allies had distracted from the war.
The Russian military has made progress in the northeastern region, taking advantage of the Ukrainian army’s shortage of troops and ammunition.
The United States and European countries have been slow to provide promised military supplies to the Ukrainian military.
Shapps told Sky News, “I really hope that the alarm bell that we have tried to set off is now heard”.
“This isn’t a war where you can be fully alert and then close your ears or maybe distract yourself from a different conflict and then expect nothing on the ground to change,” he said.
The British Defense Secretary stressed that “Ukrainians must be supported all the time, not just periodically,” noting that the $60 billion US military aid package “took a long time to be approved and pass in Congress”.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said this week during a visit to Ukraine that US aid would make a real difference to the conflict.
