A statement by the British government, reveals that London intends to work jointly with Berlin to develop new high-precision weapons with a range of more than 2,000 kilometers.

According to the statement, “Britain and Germany are working together, in a very deep way, to develop new high-precision weapons with a range of more than 2,000 kilometers”.

It was noted that the new project is based on a commitment to develop new weapons under a 2024 bilateral defense agreement.

The British Defense Secretary John Healey and his German counterpart, Boris Pistorius, will announce the project at a meeting in Berlin.

The British government statement did not provide details regarding the project’s timeline or budget, and also, both countries expected to discuss joint purchases of torpedoes for maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft, and an agreement will be announced for Berlin to purchase British-made military bridges.

Earlier, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz announced in a speech to Bundestage his country’s intention to build the strongest conventional army in Europe, stressing that strengthening the armed forces is a top priority for his government.

In his first government statement, Merz affirmed that the German government will provide all the financial resources necessary to achieve this strategic goal.

The German Chancellor indicated that partners and friends expect and even demand that Germany play this leading security role on the continent.

These statements came just days after constitutional amendments came into effect on March 25, allowing increased government borrowing to finance defense and infrastructure spending.
