Biden discusses with his family whether to proceed or withdraw from the presidential race
The US president, Joe Biden headed to Camp David, where he will discuss with first lady Jill Biden and his family members of children and grandchildren the next steps in his campaign.
In the tense political atmosphere and growing criticism, US President Joe Biden will discuss the future of his election campaign with his family at Camp David on Sunday.
The move follows a televised debate with former President Donald Trump that raised questions about Biden’s ability to lead the Democratic Party to victory in November’s presidential election.
Biden flew to Camp David, where he will discuss with first lady Jill Biden and his family members of children and grandchildren the next steps in his campaign.
According to NBC News, the first lady plays a pivotal role in making important decisions, noting that any change in the course of the campaign will come based on her advice.
Despite criticism, Biden has received support on social media from top Democratic Party leaders, including former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton.
However, sources familiar with the discussions revealed that senior Democrats in Congress, including New York Rep. Hakim Jeffries, South Carolina Rep. Jim Clipburn and Nancy Pelosi of California, have privately expressed concerns about the president’s ability to run in the race, despite their public support for him.
Despite the pressure, Biden on Saturday attended three campaign fundraisers in New York and New Jersey.
During one such event, Biden said, “It wasn’t a great night for me or for Trump,” assuring his supporters, “I promise we will win this election”.
According to Axios website, Biden won’t withdraw from the presidential race unless his inner circle, which includes his wife Jill, sister Valerie, adviser Ted Kaufman, and a small group of his White House aides, advise otherwise.
If Biden withdraws, Democrat Dean Phillips of New Hampshire emerges as a possible option to succeed him.
However, Phillips’ chances currently appear slim, according to US media, where he received only 20% of the vote in the Democratc primary in his state, while Biden won more than 60%.
