US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris considered, on Saturday, that the assassination of Hezbollah Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah in an Israeli raid on the southern suburbs of Beirut is “an act that achieves justice”.

The Democratic presidential candidate described Nasrallah as a “terrorist with American blood on his hands”.

“Today, Hezbollah’s victims received a measure of justice,” she said, adding, “I’ll always support Israel’s right to defend itself”.

In turn, Biden said that the assassination of Nasrallah “is an act that brings justice to his many victims, including thousands of American, Israeli, and Lebanese civilians”.

The US President pointed out that he directed the Secretary of Defense to continue to strengthen the defensive posture of US military forces in the Middle East region to deter aggression and reduce the risk of a wider regional war.

“Our goal is to defuse the ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon through diplomatic means,” he added in a statement, calling for an agreement to allow residents to return to their homes in Israel and southern Lebanon.

Biden continued, “The United States fully supports Israel’s right to defend itself against Hezbollah, Hamas, the Houthis, and any other terrorist groups supported by Iran”.

The US president’s statement came as the State Department ordered the families of US diplomats in Lebanon to leave, while allowing some staff to leave due to the volatile and unpredictable security situation in Beirut”.

The US State Department also urged US citizens to leave Lebanon while commercial options remain available.
