Accused of spying for the UK: Iran has executed the former deputy defense minister

On Saturday, the Iranian judiciary announced death sentence on the former Deputy Defense Minister Ali Reza Akbari, who was convicted of spying for the UK.
The Iranian Supreme Court had earlier upheld the death sentence issued against Akbari, following his conviction of spying for the British intelligence agency MI6.
It was reported that the Iranian official was arrested in 2019-2020, and it’s reported that he had British citizenship.
Ali Reza Akbari assumed his position in the Iranian Ministry of Defense, 1999-2005, during the rule of former Iranian President Muhammad Khatami.
Earlier, British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly said that the death sentence supported by the Supreme Court in Iran against a British-Iranian citizen was politically motivated.
The British Foreign Secretary wrote on Twitter: “The ruling came politically motivated by a barbaric regime that has complete disregard for human life”.
