A major Russian offensive overnight into central and southeastern Ukraine killed at least one person, Ukrainian authorities said Saturday, with fires and damage to homes and shops in several cities.

“During the night, the enemy carried out massive strikes” on Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine’s State Emergency Service said via Telegram.

The head of the regional military administration, Ivan Fedorov, said that at least one person was killed and 16 others were injured, including two children.

He added, “Russian strikes destroyed homes and damaged numerous facilities, including cafes and industrial establishments”.

The governor of Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk province announced early Saturday morning that the region was under a major attack, noting that strikes had occurred in Dnipro and Pavlograd.

“The area is under heavy attack… Explosions are being heard,” Sergei Lysak wrote on Telegram.

Since Russia launched its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Dnepropetrovsk has remained largely untouched by the fighting.

Kyiv acknowledged on Tuesday that Russian forces had entered the area, where Moscow confirmed it had made progress on the ground.

To the south, Zaporizhia Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov reported explosions and posted a photo on Telegram of a burning house in the regional capital and a power outage.

“The Russians hit the city with at least three drones,” he said.

The Dnipropetrovsk region is not among the five Ukrainian regions that Moscow has declared its annexation: Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Crimea.
