Ukrainian President rejects proposals to establish a buffer zone on the border with Russia
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected proposals to establish a buffer zone on the border between his country and Russia.
According to Ukrainian media, Zelensky made the remarks to reporters on Saturday.
Zelensky explained that some European leaders had proposed the idea of creating a buffer zone between Russian and Ukrainian forces as part of a peace agreement or ceasefire, but he categorically rejected it.
He said, “Those who propose establishing a buffer zone don’t understand the nature of warfare in the age of technology and drones… This idea is unrealistic and cannot be implemented”.
He stressed that establishing a buffer zone would effectively mean Ukraine losing part of its territory.
He considered that Russia is still not ready for dialogue and diplomacy, and is only seeking to buy time and postpone the end of the war.
European media reported that some leaders proposed establishing a 40-kilometer buffer zone between the two sides as part of any potential ceasefire agreement or long-term peace settlement.
