The city of Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine was hit by a massive ballistic missile attack early Wednesday, the mayor of the city said.

“Kharkiv is under a massive missile attack… A series of explosions were heard in the city and ballistic missiles are still heading towards it,” Igor Terekhov wrote on Telegram.

The regional governor counted seven Russian strikes, saying casualties and damage were still being assessed.

The Russian Defense Ministry announced on Wednesday that its forces had shot down 59 Ukrainian drones overnight, while the Ukrainian Air Force reported the launch of Kalibr cruise missiles from the Black Sea, the destination of which was unclear.

Russia has accelerated its advance into eastern Ukraine in recent months, hoping to seize as much territory as possible before US President-elect Donald Trump takes office in January.

Trump has pledged to bring a quick end to the nearly three-year war, but hasn’t proposed any concrete plans for a ceasefire or peace deal.

Moscow says it has seized more than 190 villages from Ukraine this year, where its forces are running low on manpower and ammunition.
